Self Portrait 2
Charcoal pencil on newsprint, 24"x18"

"Vex'd with a morbid devil in his blood
That veil'd the world with jaundice, hid his face
From all men, and commercing with himself,
He lost the sense that handles daily life--
That keeps us all in order more or less--
And sick of home went overseas for change."

-Alfred Lord Tennyson, from Walking to the Mail
As I was in New York City earlier this week filming my first video art project, I recalled a set of self-portraits (see also here). When people saw these images, they asked if the drawings were from models or photos, to which I answered "video stills." There was something very engaging to me about pushing pause and drawing a still frame. Part of it was that the image, although frozen, was only temporarily so and I knew would later continue on its way. Part of it was how the image acted like an uncooperative dummy that I could somewhat model about as I moved back and forth through the film, picking an arm here over an arm there and watching the way the light changed on an ear. Mostly, though, I think I was fascinated by the way the image was both a still and a video but refused to settle comfortably into either.
